How to Perform Intravenous Injection

Performing an intravenous (IV) injection can be a crucial medical procedure. It requires proper technique and knowledge to ensure patient safety and effective administration of medications. In this blog post, we will guide you through the step-by-step process of performing an IV injection. Please note that only trained professionals, such as healthcare providers, should perform this procedure.

Step 1: Prepare the Equipment

Before starting the procedure, gather all the necessary equipment:

  • Sterile IV catheter
  • IV solution or medication
  • Gloves
  • Alcohol swabs
  • Tourniquet
  • Gauze
  • Tape
  • Sharps container

Ensure the equipment is sterile and check the expiration date of the IV solution or medication. Proper hand hygiene is essential, so remember to wash your hands thoroughly or use hand sanitizer before proceeding.

Step 2: Verify Patient Information

Prior to administering any medication, always verify the patient’s identity using two patient identifiers, such as their name and date of birth. Make sure you have the correct medication and dosage prescribed for the patient.

Step 3: Prepare the Patient

Choose an appropriate site for the IV injection. Common sites include the forearm, back of the hand, or the antecubital area.

Inform the patient about the procedure and its purpose. Ensure they are comfortable and have cleared any doubts or concerns they may have.

Step 4: Apply Tourniquet and Locate Vein

Apply a tourniquet a few inches above the site you selected for the injection. This will help dilate the vein and make it easier to locate. Ask the patient to open and close their fist a few times to further enhance vein visibility.

Inspect the patient’s arm to locate a suitable vein for the injection. Look for visible, prominent veins. Common choices are the cephalic, basilic, or median cubital veins.

Step 5: Cleanse the Injection Site

Put on gloves and cleanse the injection site with an alcohol swab. Start from the center and move outward in a circular motion. Allow the area to air dry completely.

Step 6: Insert the IV Catheter

Hold the IV catheter like a pencil and insert it into the chosen vein at a 15 to 30-degree angle. Ensure you see a flashback of blood in the catheter’s chamber, confirming successful placement in the vein.

Once the flashback is observed, advance the catheter gently while maintaining control of the needle. Lower the angle of insertion and carefully thread the catheter into the vein. Apply pressure with a sterile gauze to the injection site while removing the needle completely.

Step 7: Connect IV Tubing and Secure the Catheter

Attach the pre-filled IV tubing to the extension port of the catheter, ensuring a secure connection. Use tape or a securement device to secure the catheter and tubing in place.

Step 8: Flush and Administer Medication

Open the clamp on the IV tubing and flush it with the prescribed flush solution. This helps to clear any air bubbles and ensure proper flow.

Administer the medication as instructed by the healthcare provider, monitoring the patient for any signs of adverse reactions.

Step 9: Dispose of Equipment and Clean Up

After administering the medication, carefully dispose of all used equipment, such as the IV catheter, gloves, and any contaminated materials, in a sharps container and biohazard bag.

Remove gloves and perform proper hand hygiene again.

Step 10: Document the Procedure

It is crucial to document the procedure accurately in the patient’s medical record. Include details such as the date, time, site, type of medication administered, dosage, and any adverse reactions observed.

Performing an intravenous injection requires precision, adherence to aseptic techniques, and knowledge of the correct procedure. Always ensure you are qualified to perform this task and follow the specific guidelines provided by your healthcare facility. By remembering the necessary steps and being diligent in your execution, you can safely and effectively administer intravenous medications to patients in need.
